What this tool does

Every video uploaded to YouTube gets a set of thumbnail images generated automatically, and those images sit on a public image server. This page reads the video ID out of whatever link you paste, checks which sizes exist for that video, and gives you each one to save.

Nothing is installed, no account is needed, and the link you paste is not stored anywhere. The whole thing runs inside your browser.

The one thing most thumbnail downloaders get wrong

When YouTube has not generated a particular size for a video, it does not return an error. It returns a grey 120-pixel placeholder image instead.

Most tools display that placeholder as though it were a result. You click download, and end up with a blank grey rectangle. This tool checks the actual pixel width of every image it receives and discards anything that turns out to be the placeholder, which is why you sometimes see three results instead of four. What you see here exists.

How to use it

1. Open the video on YouTube and copy the link from your browser’s address bar, or use the Share button.
2. Paste it into the box above and press Get thumbnails.
3. Pick the size you want and press Download.

Shorts links, youtu.be short links, embed URLs and live stream links all work. You can also paste just the 11-character video ID on its own.

Which size should you actually pick?

Take the largest one available unless you have a reason not to. A 1280 x 720 image scales down cleanly; a 320 x 180 image scaled up looks like exactly what it is.

Two exceptions worth knowing. If you are placing dozens of thumbnails on one page, the 320 x 180 version keeps the page fast. And if you are analysing a competitor’s thumbnail design rather than displaying it, the medium size is usually enough to see the composition.

One thing no tool can do: give you a 4K thumbnail. YouTube stops at 1280 x 720. Sites advertising 1080p or 4K thumbnails are upscaling the 720p file, which adds pixels but no detail.

Why the largest size is sometimes missing

YouTube only generates the 1280 x 720 version when the uploader supplied artwork big enough for it. Older videos, and videos uploaded from phones at lower resolutions, often stop at 640 x 480. If the biggest size does not appear in your results, it does not exist for that video.

The same applies to private, unlisted, deleted and age-restricted videos, whose thumbnails are not publicly served at all.

Doing it without a tool

Thumbnail URLs follow a fixed pattern, so you can build one by hand if you prefer:

Swap maxresdefault for sddefault, hqdefault or mqdefault for the smaller sizes. This is genuinely all any thumbnail downloader does — the useful part is checking which of those four actually exist, which is tedious by hand and instant here.

Before you use a thumbnail

A thumbnail is part of someone’s video and is usually protected by copyright, exactly like the video itself. Saving one for private reference, for a class, or for commentary and review is generally uncontroversial. Republishing it as your own artwork, using it in advertising, or putting it on merchandise is not.

Is it free?

Yes, with no limit on how many videos you look up and no account required.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On mobile browsers the Download button may open the image in a new tab instead of saving directly — press and hold the image, then choose Save Image.

Can I get a thumbnail from a private video?

No. Private and deleted videos do not have publicly available thumbnails, so nothing will be returned.

Does this download the video itself?

Can I download a Shorts thumbnail?

Yes. Paste the Shorts link and it works exactly the same way. Note that the stored thumbnail is widescreen rather than vertical — that is how YouTube generates them.

Why did I get a grey placeholder image?

You should not, because this tool filters them out. If one ever slips through, it is YouTube’s stand-in for a size that was never generated.

Is 4K or 1080p possible?

No. YouTube’s largest stored thumbnail is 1280 x 720. Anything advertised as larger has been upscaled.
