How to convert a YouTube video to MP3

Three steps. A four-minute song takes about ten seconds.

1

Copy the link

In the YouTube app, tap Share then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address from the browser bar.

2

Paste and press Get MP3

The video appears with a list of options. Choose MP3 audio rather than one of the MP4 sizes.

3

Save the file

The download starts on its own, and a Save button appears in case your browser blocks it.

What the MP3 actually sounds like

Files come out as MP3 at 192 kbps. That is comfortably past the point where most people can hear a difference on phone speakers, laptop speakers, earbuds or a car stereo, and it keeps a four-minute track to roughly 5 MB.

Worth being straight about the ceiling, because plenty of converters are not. YouTube stores audio at around 128 kbps for most videos, sometimes 160. Nothing can create detail that was never in the file, so a converter advertising 320 kbps is simply re-encoding a smaller file into a bigger one. You get a larger download and no extra quality.

Where the file goes

iPhone and iPad

Use Safari. The MP3 lands in Files, then Downloads.

Apple Music will not import it automatically. Open it from Files to play it, or move it in through a Mac or a third-party player.

If nothing seems to happen, check the download arrow beside Safari’s address bar.

Android, Windows, Mac

On Android the file goes to Downloads, and most music apps find it within a minute.

On Windows and Mac it goes to your browser’s Downloads folder.

Track names come from the video title, so renaming the file is often worth the few seconds.

If something goes wrong

No MP3 option appears

A few videos only expose combined streams. If the list shows MP4 sizes but no audio entry, that track is not separately available for that video.

The file plays but has no sound

Check your device is not muted and the volume is up in the player itself. If it is genuinely silent, the source video may have had its audio removed over a copyright claim.

It is taking a long time

Long videos take longer, because the audio has to be fetched and converted. Anything over about an hour may time out.

“Video not found”

The video is private, deleted, or blocked in the server’s region. Check it plays in a private browser window.

The copyright part, honestly

Most music on YouTube belongs to the artist and their label, and converting a commercial track to MP3 is not something a licence covers just because the tool is free. If you want to own music, buy it or stream it from a service that pays the people who made it.

Where this tool genuinely earns its place is everything else: lectures, podcasts, interviews, talks, your own uploads, and Creative Commons audio. YouTube Premium also lets you listen with the screen off, which is what a lot of people are really after.

We are not going to pretend that nobody uses converters for music. But we are also not going to tell you it is fine when it is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is this YouTube to MP3 converter free?

Yes. No account, no sign-up and no limit on how many files you convert, apart from a short pause if a lot of downloads start from one connection at once.

What bitrate do I get?

192 kbps. YouTube itself stores audio at around 128 to 160 kbps, so 192 preserves everything that was there. Converters advertising 320 kbps are padding a smaller file, not adding quality.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes, through Safari. The MP3 goes to the Files app in the Downloads folder. Note that it will not appear in Apple Music on its own.

Can I convert a whole playlist?

No. One video at a time. Open each video and paste its own link.

Why is there no MP3 option for some videos?

A small number of videos only expose combined video-and-audio streams. When that happens, no separate audio track is available to extract.

How long can the video be?

Up to about an hour works reliably. Longer recordings can time out while the file is being prepared.

Do you keep the files?

No. The prepared file is deleted automatically, usually within about 30 minutes, and we keep no record of what anyone converted.

Is converting YouTube music to MP3 legal?

Generally not, if the track is commercial music you do not own the rights to. YouTube’s terms only permit downloading where YouTube itself offers it. Lectures, podcasts, your own uploads and Creative Commons audio are a different matter.

Can I get the video instead?

Yes. Pick one of the MP4 options after pasting, or use our YouTube video downloader, which is the same tool written for video.
